DEPARTMENT HISTORY

Originally, the department was housed in the Division of Communication, which combined curricular elements of what would become the Departments of  (a) Speech, (b) Theatre and Dance, and (c) Communications.  The Department of Speech, established in 1964, was renamed the Department of Speech Communication in 1969 and was renamed the Department of Human Communication Studies in 2002. When the department name was changed to Speech Communication in 1969, its curriculum fell into two areas of emphasis:  (a) public address and (b) speech pathology and audiology.  The name represented as clearly as possible the departments curricular mission, and many similarly constituted departments had the same name.  The two areas of emphasis became separate degree programs in 1979.

The B.A. and M.A. degree programs in Speech Communication have evolved from the public address emphasis, and the B.A. and M.A. programs in Communicative Disorders have evolved from the speech pathology and audiology emphasis.  The speech communication degree program, from its original singular emphasis in public address, has evolved into an area with emphases in persuasion and argumentation, organizational communication, interpersonal communication, and intercultural communication.  The communicative disorders program has evolved from an emphasis on disorders of speech itself to one that focuses predominantly on disorders of communication that are not speech (e.g., language, non-oral communication, assisted communication, pragmatic aspects of communication, and swallowing).

HISTORY OF THE ANDERSEN RESEARCH CENTER

On the occasion of his retirement in 1970, Dr. Martin Andersen donated his personal library to the department for use by students and faculty.  Some years later he added a duplicating machine to ensure that study copies of materials would be available to all of us.  The ARC now houses more donated materials and department acquisitions of hardcopy literature which are prized resources.  By 1984-5, the ARC held subscriptions to over 22 different journals.  The ARC is supervised by the Department Instructional Resource Committee, who constantly reviews and updates the collection and subscriptions.
