Debate Team Makes History

MagallonLuis Magallon, sophomore, and Brenda Montes, junior, qualified for the National Debate Tournament (NDT), and only the 2nd team in Fullerton history to win an elimination round at the NDT and the only non-senior team ever to do so.

Magallon was the 16th individual speaker, the best finish of any sophomore in Fullerton history, and Montes was the 4th speaker, the best finish of any Fullerton student ever in the 60-year history of the NDT. Portions of the NDT will appear on College Sports Television this coming fall.

At the Cross Examination Debate Association national tournament the pair advanced to the round of 32 where they lost a 2-1 decision. Magallon was named the 5th speaker and Montes 2nd.

Only two schools finished with 2 speakers in the top 5; one was Harvard and the other was Fullerton. Also advancing to the elimination rounds were the teams of Dale Morrison sophomore, and Josh Pang, junior, and Lisa Ho, sophomore, and Amy Wooten, freshman.

Cal State Fullerton was named the 1st place school in its region, finishing ahead of USC, Redlands, Pepperdine, and all other Cal State schools.
