Ten student films were shown
during two college presentations at the Newport Beach
Film Festival in April. Student filmmakers Marie
Sanyas, Brett Meyer, Fahmi Farahat, Michel Makins, Michael
Castaneda, Andy Chinn, Sean Nietschmann, and
Neil Sakatani showcased their short
films to a greater Orange County audience. Also among
them was a short documentary directed and produced by
Becky Baumgartner, a RTVF graduate,
entitled Heart of a Soul Surfer that chronicles
Bethany Hamilton’s road to recovery after a freak
shark attack. The Festival showcases more than 350 films
from around the world.

(CNBAM) Conference
Student Award Recipients
Also, Daily Titan's advertising
student staff attended the CNBAM conference this year
for the fifth year in a row, in Portland. With the competition
bigger this year than any other before, the advertising
staff still managed to pick up six awards. The Daily
Titan was ultimately the #2 paper in the nation behind
the University of Kansas. The advertising department
is looking forward to winning even more awards next
year, when they attend the conference in San Antonio,
TX.
At press time, the CoC was fourth in total
points in the National Hearst Competition, which involves
all accredited Journalism/Communications programs in
the nation. Entries, for the most part, came from Tusk
magazine.

In addition, the Daily Titan
recently won three 2007 ADDYS from the Orange County
Ad Club. The paper won silver for “Element of
Advertising, Animation” by student Keith
Hansen. His entry will be automatically forwarded
to the National Final Competition, which will include
the top winners from each of the 15 district competitions
around the country. Two merit awards were also given
for “Interactive Media Web Site” to Daily
Titan webmaster, Dan Beam.

The CoC debate team also finished one of its most successful
seasons competing in the CEDA and the National Debate
Tournament. At the CEDA tournament, Brenda Montes
and Luis Magallon finished as the 4th
and 7th speakers in a field of over 300. Fullerton was
the only school with two speakers in the Top 7. Most
impressively, Brenda Montes was named the Debater of
the Year, which is given to the top undergraduate competitor
in the nation: the debate equivalent of the Heisman
Trophy. Also competing at CEDA were Fullerton
students Josh Pang and Parija
Patel, both seniors, as well as Pooja
Chopra, Brett Beeler and Caitlin
Gray. The squad is coached by Professors Toni
Nielson and Jon Bruschke.

Finally, public relations students Scott

Chu are included as one of the top three finalists
in the PRSSA National Bateman PR Campaign Competition.
This competition is the largest and most prestigious
public relations student campaign competition in the
United States. They will be flying to New York to make
their presentation in May (May 17-20th) and to compete
for #1 against two other teams.
