Valuable Involvement
Getting to the Bottom of Titan Communications

There’s something happening in the Pollak Library basement, and it has nothing to do with the Dewey decimal system. The action ensues at Titan Communications where “the faces and voices of Cal State Fullerton,” busily work together to produce high quality programming with Titan TV and Titan Radio. This student-run media center provides the opportunity and resources for students to learn in a hands-on, co-curricular environment that translates to real world, industry expectations.

“At Titan Communications, I can put to use what I learn in the classroom,” says Broadcast Journalism major Peter Martinez, the student Executive Producer / Production Coordinator currently involved in his third year with Titan TV. His work on the news magazine show “On the Edge” recently earned him and his Titan Channel staff a Region 11 Mark of Excellence award that will be presented at a conference held during COMMWEEK 2007.

“People come out with knowledge that TV is serious work. It’s a hard job, but it pays off,” says Martinez who is also utilizing his experience at Titan Communications with an internship with KCET TV as part of the Emma Bowen Foundation scholarship. In fact, a recent media partnership with KCET is also expanding the scope of Titan Communications and it’s a perfect time for students to get involved.

Intern Michelle Brink states her duties are “close to what a paid person would do,” which gives her valuable experience for future goals and builds up her resume. The internship also meets the Comm 495 requirement needed to graduate. Students interested in internship opportunities with Titan TV should contact Eraj Shadaram at (714) 278-7462 for more information.

Titan TV also offers services to various media clients who use students to support a variety of productions, including orientation videos to a CSUF 50th Anniversary project that is currently in production. Programming also reaches a large Orange County audience on the Titan Channel via Time Warner Cable and on Web TV at http://titancom.fullerton.edu. Programming like the news magazine show, “On the Edge” and “Conversations with President Gordon & Special Guests” can also be viewed on plasma TV screens in the Pollak Library and College Park lobbies right here on campus.

A few doors down from Titan TV is Titan Radio, a streaming Internet station that is available 24/7 at www.TitanRadio.org. Similar to Titan TV, students have the opportunity to gain hands on experience with radio station management, operations, and on-air performance on a volunteer basis.

According to General Manager Aaron Eastwood, “We’re always looking for outgoing, dedicated, and inspiring individuals to serve as DJs, volunteer assistants or as one of our paid staff members.” Students involved with Titan Radio have the freedom to handpick their own music and show content while working in a fun, creative atmosphere. Listeners can also talk to DJs directly by calling the request line at (714) 278-5516.

“It’s a given opportunity. It’s a shame to not take advantage of it now,” says Martinez, who welcomes students to volunteer at Titan Communications. Martinez adds that being part of Titan Communications is a great opportunity to “put yourself out there and not be afraid to challenge yourself,” which he has been doing since his first year at CSUF. So next time you’re in the Pollak Library, be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for Titan Communications.

Some familiar faces and voices at Titan Communications this spring semester are Peter Martinez, Aaron Eastwood, Chris Campbell, Govinda Kamtamneni, Michelle McMillan, Chris Struckhoff, Jon Texas, Erik Ventura, and Ali Abdul-Sater. New students include Michelle Brink, Ryan Buckner, Alicia Jennings, Jolene Napoletano, Fatima Rahmatullah, and Glynnes Pruett.
