College of Communications
These scholarships present a selection of those established through the generosity of alumni, faculty and community supporters to assist students in the completion of programs offered by the College of Communications. In addition, College of Communications majors and minors can apply for a wide range of scholarships and awards offered by a host of outside private organizations and professional societies. Scholarships
Please read all instructions for each scholarship and pay attention to the deadline, as well as details for required statements, letters of recommendation or other materials. There are variations in the application procedures and requirements for each scholarship. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.
Note: For all scholarships, the notification process does not include a notification to all applicants but only to the selected recipient of the scholarship. The expected date of notification is by the end of May.
College of Communications Scholarships
All College of Communications scholarship recipients must write and send a thank-you letter to the
donor. Templates for these letters will be provided. Recipients also will be required to submit a 50- to
100-word bio and professional-style headshot to be used in college or department newsletters, social
media or other material publicizing scholarship winners.
Norman McFarland Scholarship
Amount: Six $11,000 Scholarships
Established by: The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in honor of Norman McFarland to support
students with financial needs within the College of Communications who are members of the CSUF
Titan Catholic Club on campus.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students who are pursuing degree in communications, film, television, or other forms of media.
Criteria: Member of the CSUF Titan Catholic Club on Campus ♦ full-time enrollment ♦ financial need ♦
cumulative G.P.A. of 2.75 of greater

Bergstrom Family Scholarship
Amount: Two $2,000 Scholarships
Established by: This endowed scholarship was created by Richard Bergstrom on behalf of the Bergstrom Family to support students with financial need who have overcome significant challenges while pursuing their degree.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students who are pursuing a major or minor in the College of Communications (any of the four departments HCOM, CTVA, COMD, and COMM).

Tien Family Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This scholarship was established by CSUF College of Communications alumna
Quyen Tien on behalf of the Tien Family to support students with financial need who have
overcome significant challenges while pursuing their degree.

Denise Harrison Integrity Award
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This award is named in memory of Denise Anne Harrison, a 1991 communications
(journalism) master’s graduate. Denise was known by colleagues, friends and family for her generosity of spirit and unwavering integrity. Her professional career included work for several aerospace companies including Hughes Aircraft Company and as an independent contractor/free-lance writer for several audio-visual companies, most recently as the director of marketing communications for Professional Systems Network International. A compassionate and caring person, Denise also donated her time to animal shelters and served on the board of a nonprofit for missing persons called Project Jason.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students who are currently pursuing a master’s degree in the College of Communications (any of the four areas: M.A., Communications; M.A., Communications Studies; M.A., Communicative Disorders; M.F.A., Screenwriting).
Criteria: 3.3 GPA overall ♦ integrity in educational studies and/or professional work

The John and Jessie Maxwell Communications Scholarship
Amount: $250 to $1,000 (multiple awards given)
Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by an endowment from John William Maxwell, founding chair of the Department of Communications at Cal State Fullerton.
Open to: This scholarship is open to all Communications and CTVA students, including continuing majors and incoming transfer or freshmen students who declare Communications or CTVA as a major.
Criteria: Good academic standing

Guadalupe Austin Memorial Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This scholarship is named for Guadalupe Austin, in her memory, by husband Steven and daughter Jennifer, to support students who have experienced financial hardship due to the death of a spouse, parent or close family member. Steven is a 1984 graduate from the College of Communications and hopes to help others facing a loss of a loved one by providing a scholarship in Guadalupe’s name.

Lucio Villa Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: The purpose of the gift will be to provide annual funding of $1,000 to support the Lucio Villa Scholarship in the College of Communications.
Open to: It is open to students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in the College of Communications. Special consideration given to students who participate in the Latino Communications Institute.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA overall ♦ full-time CSUF enrollment ♦ financial need

Mona A. Baset Scholarship
Amount: $2,500
Established by: The purpose of the gift will be to provide annual funding of $2,500 to support the Mona A. Baset Scholarship in the College of Communications.

Viet Dzung Human Rights Scholarship
Amount: Two $1,000 scholarships
Established by: This scholarship is named in memory of Viet Dzung (1958-2013), a legendary radio commentator, columnist and activist. Upon fleeing from Vietnam after the Fall of Saigon in 1975, Viet Dzung settled in the United States and rose to fame as a singer, songwriter and political commentator. Using radio, television and newspaper mediums, he spoke out against communism, advocated for human rights and encouraged young people to get involved in their community.
Open to: It is open to students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in the College of Communications (any of the four departments HCOM, CTVA, COMD, and COMM).
Criteria: 2.5 GPA ♦ Full-time ♦ Selected recipients should write a 1 page essay demonstrating an interest
in human rights, experience fighting injustices, and/or advocacy work.

Hennessey Family Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: The Hennessey Family scholarship was established by Katie Hennessey ’12, College of Communications alumna, to honor the memory of her sister Kelli Hennessey (Topp).
Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing students actively pursuing a career
in entertainment or sports; students majoring or minoring in a degree program in the
College of Communications. Students must be enrolled full-time in the academic year in
which they will receive the award.
Criteria: Full-Time Enrollment ♦ Minimum 2.5 GPA ♦ Financial Need ♦ Cannot be receiving
more than $5,000 in other scholarships ♦ Preference for this scholarship will be given to
students pursuing a career in entertainment or sports ♦ Student must be majoring or

Sha-Aeschelmann Study Abroad Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: Dr. Bey-Ling Sha her husband Guy Aeschelmann and sister Ting-Ling Sha. The purpose of the gift will be to provide annual funding of $1,000 to support the Sha-Aeschelmann Study Abroad Scholarship in the College of Communications.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students who are in the College of Communications and are studying abroad. Preference to students on the Dean’s list.
Criteria: Must be a full-time student in good academic standing and are studying abroad.

Robert E. Rayfield Memorial Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: Ann Rayfield in honor of her husband Robert “Bob” Rayfield, emeritus professor of communications. Rayfield joined the campus as a part-time lecturer in 1983 and in a year became a full-time faculty member in the Communications Department. The purpose of the gift will be to provide annual funding of $1,000 to support the public relations students.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students who are in the College of Communications
with a major in Public Relations.
Criteria: Must be a full-time student in good academic standing.

Terry Hynes Scholarship
Amount: Two $1,000 Scholarships
Established by: This scholarship was endowed by Terry Hynes, former chair of CSUF’s Department of Communications and currently assistant vice president of the Office of University Relations at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Open to: This scholarship is open to Communication majors who will be seniors with at least one semester enrollment remaining at Cal State Fullerton.
Criteria: Outstanding academic performance ♦ Contributions to the communications department

IAAPA Foundation/Themed Advisors LLC Scholarship
Amount: Two $2,500 Scholarships
Established by: The IAAPA Foundation/Themed Advisors LLC scholarship was established by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Foundation to support undergraduate students who are focused on a career in the attractions industry.
Open to: Full-time undergraduate students in the Department of Communications or other
CSUF students with a demonstrated career interest in the attractions industry.
Criteria: Academic achievement (2.85+ GPA) ♦ financial need

Myles Atlas Memorial Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This scholarship was endowed by Rhonda Atlas Garside, widow of Myles Atlas, in memory of her husband’s long and successful career in the advertising business.

James Alexander Scholarship
Amount: Two $1,500 Scholarships
Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Professor Emeritus James Alexander to recognize and honor students who have demonstrated strong academic performance and been actively involved in their high school newspaper, yearbook or magazine production. Applicants are required to write a 225-word essay describing their high school writing experience and their career goals as well as providing a sample of a published story, article or photo from a high school publication.
Open to: This scholarship is open to freshman and sophomore students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree from the Department of Communications.
Criteria: 2.85 GPA ♦ Full-time ♦ Quality of writing sample

Jay Berman Daily Titan Scholarship
Amount: Two $1,000 Scholarships
Established by: This endowed scholarship was established by former students, family and friends of Jay Berman, Daily Titan adviser from 1981 to 1992, to recognize a student journalist who has made significant contributions to the Daily Titan. The scholarship will be awarded based on outstanding performance and writing for the Daily Titan campus student newspaper.Open to: This scholarship is open to junior or senior communication majors with at least one semester enrollment remaining at Cal State Fullerton.

Established by: These scholarships are donated by the Titan Requisition Rewards Program of Titan Shops/Titan Bookstore.

Chris Dufresne Sports Journalism Scholarship
Amount: $1,000
Established by: This scholarship was established in memory of Chris Dufresne, sports
journalist, 1981 College of Communications alumnus, and Department of Communications Wall of Fame honoree. A recognized and respected Los Angeles Times sportswriter for 35 years, he was their national college football and basketball columnist from 1995 to 2015. He also covered pro football, Olympic skiing, golf, etc., won multiple awards and was named the 2011 California Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (now NSMA). Chris continued to give back to his alma mater throughout his career by mentoring students who shared his passion for sports and its connection to the human condition. sports journalism.

Open to: This scholarship is open to students who are pursuing a Communications major with a concentration in Public Relations or Journalism. Special consideration given to students who participate in the Latino Communications Institute.

Gary Granville Memorial Scholarship
Amount: Two $1,000 Scholarships
Established by: This scholarship was established by former students, family and friends of the late Gary Granville, lecturer and Daily Titan adviser, to recognize a student who has made significant contributions to the Daily Titan. The scholarship will be awarded based on outstanding performance as an editor or as a staff reporter on the Daily Titan campus student newspaper.
Open to: This scholarship is open to junior or senior communication majors with at least one semester enrollment remaining at Cal State Fullerton.
Criteria: 2.5 GPA ♦ quality of published work

Ingrid and Jordan Smart Scholarship
Amount: Two $1,000 Scholarships
Established by: This scholarship is named for Latino Communications Institute Founding Partner Ingrid Otero Smart and alumnus Jordan Smart ’18 to support students interested in pursuing a career in multicultural advertising.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students who are pursuing a communications major with a concentration in advertising or public relations. Students must also participate in the Latino Communications Institute.

Alfred and Louise Hewitt Journalism Fund
Amount: Up to $1,000
Established by: This scholarship was established by Mr. Stephen Hewitt in memory of his parents, Alfred and Louise Hewitt. Mr. Alfred Hewitt was passionate about journalism and this scholarship will celebrate his witty journalistic soul. In the tradition of his humor and teaching style, this scholarship is being established in his name to honor students who carry on his writing style and approach to journalism.
Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate students majoring in communications with a concentration in journalism.

Established by: This scholarship was established to recognize and honor students with good academic credentials who are in need of financial assistance.

Glyndon D. Riley Memorial Scholarship
Amount: Two $2,000 Scholarships
Established by: This award was established by Jeanna Riley in loving memory of her husband Glyndon D. Riley. Dr. Riley was a long-time professor in the Communicative Disorders program and was one of the founders of the Center for Children Who Stutter. Along with his wife, Jeanna, Glyndon created groundbreaking research on stuttering in children and adults. Much of the Riley’s work is still used today to diagnose and treat stuttering. This scholarship was created to continue Glyndon’s legacy and encourage professional interest in children who stutter.

California Scottish Rite Foundation Scholarship
Amount: Two $2,000 Scholarships
Established by: This award was established by the California Scottish Rite Foundation to benefit Communicative Disorders graduate students who plan to pursue careers as speech-language pathologists and help children with speech-language disorders. The mission of the California Scottish Rite Foundation is dedicated to support and assist the children in California to develop their full potential by providing childhood language services, scholarships and other charitable programs.

Established by: This award was established by Traci Terpstra, an alumna in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program, who found a passion to become a speech-language pathologist later in her career. This scholarship was created to provide support to students who plan to pursue careers as speech-language pathologists and help children with speech-language disorders.
Open to: This scholarship is open to incoming or continuing students who are pursuing a master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Cal State Fullerton.

● Students from underrepresented backgrounds who have had or are experiencing financial hardship

Established by: This scholarship was created by the 2017 executive board of the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA) chapter at California State University, Fullerton to support students pursuing careers in communicative disorders. The NSSLHA chapter at California State University, Fullerton strives to provide cutting edge opportunities for students to supplement their education through service events, conferences, panels, social gatherings, and speaker events.
Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students majoring in communicative disorders. You must be a registered member of the NSSLHA chapter at CSUF to apply.

Established by: This scholarship was established by long-time faculty member in the Department of Communications Sciences and Disorders, Dr. Terry Irvine Saenz. Dr. Saenz advocated for multicultural curriculum and clinical practice to provide learning opportunities mirroring the diversity of cultures and languages in our world. The scholarship is named for Dr. Saenz and her sister Holly Anne Irvine who was a speech-language pathologist.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree majoring in the Department of Communication Disorders at Cal State Fullerton. Applicants should be interested in a career as a speech-language pathologist or audiologist

Jim & Rose Lloyd Scholarship

Established by: This scholarship was established by Jim and Rose Marie Lloyd in their legacy. Rose received her master’s degree in Speech Pathology and became a special education teacher. Rose lost her hearing at 26 years old, and the couple created this scholarship to support undergraduate students with hearing impairments in her honor.
Open to: This scholarship is open to students pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Department of Communication Disorders at Cal State Fullerton. Applicants should be interested in pursuing a career as a speech-language pathologist or audiologist. Preference will be given to students with hearing-impairments.
