Lindsay Kwek - CSUF Alumna ...PR Professional...World Traveler
Riding a camel in Egypt, standing at the border of South and North Korea, going on an African Safari, and reflecting at the Taj Mahal may not have been in the plans when Lindsay Kwek, class of 2010, graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations, but that is where life took her.
Kwek was an active participant in student life at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). PRSSA, ASI Productions, Alpha Delta Pi, New Student Orientation, and COMM WEEK were just a few of the organizations that she was involved in during her time on campus. Involvement, which led to networking, was a big part of helping her decide what she wanted to do in the future. It gave her an opportunity to try out different experiences, which in turn allowed her to figure out what she did and didn’t like.
In addition to researching different careers, Kwek also learned a lot about leadership during her time at CSUF, which has helped in her career. “Being an orientation leader we had to figure out leadership style and personality types, and I still use those skills today,” she says.
After graduation, Kwek went on to work for Walt Disney Studios, Slate PR, and Paramount Pictures. In 2017 she was at a “career crossroads,” and decided it was time for a break. She knew that the time was now or never, and embarked on a six-month sabbatical traveling all over the globe. While seeing the wonders of the world, Kwek had “time to think and put down goals.” She knew she wanted to continue working as a publicist in the entertainment industry, so she focused on that goal. Upon her return from travelling, a connection in her CSUF network led to a job at the Sundance Institute, which produces the Sundance Film Festival.
Her advice for students? “Network as much as possible. Do as much as you can. Try things out to feel out what you want to do.”
The College of Communications is proud to call Kwek an alumna. She is a prime example of the exciting journey an education at CSUF can launch students into.
