Maria Burton, named by Variety as "talent to watch," has directed five successful feature films, the latest of which was acquired by Mar Vista for release in 2016. A Sort of Homecoming , the feature film starring Laura Marano (Austin & Ally), Katherine McNamara (Shadowhunters), Parker Mack (Chasing Life), Michelle Clunie (Queer as Folk, Teen Wolf) and Kathleen Wilhoite, is now available on iTunes. Burton's sixth feature, For the Love of George , a comedy starring Nadia Jordan, Tate Donovan, Rosanna Arquette, Rex Lee and Kristen Johnston, is currently in post for a 2017 release.
Burton's earlier films are Just Friends (AMC/WE), Temps (Netflix), and Manna From Heaven (MGM/SONY), and Sign My Snarling Movie - a documentary about the popular a cappella singing group, The Bobs. Burton recently directed the webseries, Old Guy , starring Peri Gilpin (Frasier) and produced The Happiest Day of His Life (MTV/Logo), Kings, Queens & In-Betweens , and Julia Sweeney's Letting Go of God (Showtime.)
Burton helms her production company, Five Sisters Productions, with her real-life siblings. An Emeritus Board Member of the Alliance of Women Directors, as well as Global Girl Media, Burton also works on social and political campaigns, including commercials for the #MarchingForward viral video produced for The Representation Projectand Global Girl Media, the "Mamas for Obama" Campaign and the Campaign for the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking, featuring Julia Ormond. Other directing work includes Stephen Kanner: A Retrospective, a short film about visionary architect Stephen Kanner for the A+D Museum, "Act I" for the USA Pavilion for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai,"The Path to a Cure" for MGH's ALS Multidisciplinary Clinic and commercials for the"Faces of Ford - Your Ford Story" Campaign for Ford Motor Company. Burton is also a member of Film Fatales.
Burton has been chosen for the DGA's inaugural Director Development Initiative, the Rodrigo Garcia/Jon Avnet Indigenous Incubator ProjectHER in conjunction with Conde Nast, invited to participate in the CBS Diversity 2nd Annual Director Breakfast Mixer and her Mercury 13 screenplay has been named to the Athena List, the Bechdel/Bitch List and is a 2016 Nicholl Quarterfinalist.
Burton is developing an indie TV pilot, MidLife, as well as her next feature film, a drama inspired by the "Mercury 13" women who were tested for the original astronaut program in 1961-62.
