Mitzi Gonzalez
Class of 2016
BA in Public Relations
Where do you currently work, and what do you do there?
I am an agency assistant at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles.
What do you think helped you land this position?
I networked with executives in the industry throughout my internships at NALIP and CBS, and I kept those relationships alive even when I was no longer there.
How did LCI prepare you for what you are doing today, or how did it help shape your career?
LCI pushed me out of my comfort zone. I was shy and didn’t know anything about this huge and sometimes overwhelming industry. Seeing other students’ successes in LCI motivated me to learn and grow as much as I could. LCI helped me realize that it was okay to ask for help and advice especially in the beginning when you don’t know where to begin.
What advice would you give current students or recent graduates in pursuing a career in your professional field?
Informational interviews are life. It’s one thing that can grow your network and even help you get a job, but for some reason a lot of students don’t know about them. Just go on LinkedIn or Facebook and message professionals asking them to meet to learn more about their job, be prepared with questions, and continue the conversation even after you leave.
Learn. Never doubt your ability to learn, it doesn’t matter if you have no experience at all or don’t know about the industry. As long as you’re willing to do whatever it takes to acquire the skills you need, you will reach your goals. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
