Dr. Ed Fink is a Professor of Cinema and Television Arts and the immediate past Dean of the College of Communications. He earned his Ph.D. in Mass Communications and his M.A. in Telecommunications from Indiana University, as well as his B.A. in Theatre and Drama from Valparaiso University. He joined the Communications faculty at Cal State Fullerton in 1990, advancing through the ranks to Full Professor in 2006. He became the Director of the Faculty Development Center in 2013, the Associate Dean of the College of Communications in 2014, the Dean of that College in 2017, and returned to faculty in 2020. He authored the proposals that launched the B.A. degree in, and department of, Radio-TV-Film in 2001, serving as the inaugural chair of that department for 11 years. That department was renamed Cinema and Television Arts in 2016.
Dr. Fink has received awards and recognition as an outstanding teacher, scholar, and advisor. He is the author or co-author of four textbooks in his areas of expertise, including television and video production, writing, and media history. Additionally, he has published articles in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Film and Video, Journalism & Communication Review, Journal of Popular Film & Television, and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly. He has also presented at numerous conferences, including the University Film and Video Association, the International Communication Association, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the National Broadcasting Society, and the Broadcast Education Association, for which he serves as a division officer. He has a successful record of collaborative fundraising. He has been awarded two grants and four sabbatical leaves for his scholarly and creative work. He serves the university, community, and profession on a variety of committees and advisory boards.
