COMD 495 Internship in Communication Sciences and Disorders
We are offering the COMD 495 Internship Course to current CSUF students who plan to apply for an SLPA license when they complete their B.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders at CSUF. This course is usually offered in Spring and Summer only.
Students must complete COMD 495 Internship course and the required fieldwork experience through COMD 495 to apply for a California SLPA license. If you are interested in applying to take the course in Summer 2025 (Summer E term, May 27-August 1), please submit all relevant documents via email

The academic portion of COMD 495 is offered fully online, featuring virtual live classes and asynchronous learning. It supports the ASHA certification requirements for SLPAs by covering essential topics such as ethics, scope of practice, the supervisory process, professional practice, universal safety precautions, and patient confidentiality.
One hundred (100) hours of internship experience consist of at least 80 hours of direct patient contact and 20 hours of indirect patient, client, or student services, as per ASHA SLPA regulations. Observation does not count towards the in-direct hours.
- All hours must be obtained under the supervision of a speech-language pathologist who holds a current, valid certificate of clinical competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA CCC-SLP) and is licensed to practice as a speech-language pathologist in California. Hours not obtained in direct patient contact will consist of administrative tasks and other appropriate duties assigned by the supervising SLP.
