Dr. Irene Matz, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies. She served as the associate dean and interim dean for the College of Communications at California State University, Fullerton for seven years where she led 80 full-time and 100 part-time faculty with an annual budget of $8.5M that served 4,000 students. As the interim dean for the College, she traveled to Cuba and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the President of the University of Havana and the Dean for the College of Communications that developed an exchange program between the two universities. As dean, she also travel to Korea and was an invited guest at Dong-Ah Institute of Media and Arts’ ceremony; she delivered a presentation at Jin-ai University in Echizen City, Japan; and represented the College at the Shenyang City University Forum, Shenyang, China.

She earned her doctorate from Claremont Graduate University in education focusing on leadership and bachelor and master degrees in speech communication. She was awarded the 2014 College of Education’s Honor an Educator Award; the Distinguished Faculty Award for 2019; the University Faculty Leadership in Collegial Governance Award for 2020; and nominated by the University President for the Wang Family Excellence Award for Outstanding Faculty Service in 2021.

Dr. Matz chaired the Faculty Affairs Committee for the Academic Senate California State University where she was an elected member from 2019-2022.

Her research includes women leaders, leadership, ethics, first ladies in the White House and organizational communication.
